Short Bio of Prof. Francesco Causone
Prof. Francesco Causone is an Associate Professor at the Department of Energy of the Politecnico di Milano, Italy. He is LEED AP and has gained world-class industry experience as a Sustainability Researcher at Foster + Partners in London, where he worked on the design of major headquarter buildings in Cupertino and London. His expertise includes energy and indoor environmental quality assessment in the built environment, and buildings/cities sustainable design, including carbon neutrality and zero energy approaches. He is currently a member of a Smart City Lighthouse project funded by H2020, developing applied research at the urban-scale.

The presentation will provide an overview of ongoing and concluded research projects managed by Francesco Causone in the field of the built environment. Starting from examples focused on the performance improvement of single buildings, the author will show how the high-level general objectives of zero energy and carbon neutrality promoted by EU and many cities all over the world are impossible to be pursued without a real systemic approach, that implies a change of scale, toward the district and eventually the urban level. If the building scale requires a few expertise to be coordinated, urban-scale projects are definitely, and may only be, multi-sectorial and interdisciplinary, thus a new approach is required in order to obtain useful results. Early example of smart cities projects are reported, highlighting possibilities to be exploited and limitation to be tackled.
